John is a proud graduate of the Engaged Mindfulness Institute’s year one MFT certification program and is entering year two with intentions of gaining MTT 500 certification.

A student and practitioner of Shambhala Buddhism since 1982, for over 16 years John has been teaching Mindfulness Awareness Meditation within Shambhala and is an active Assistant Director for Shambhala Training.

John spent 25 years in the film business working in the studios and on locations in Los Angeles and across the country, in Canada & Mexico. A life-long musician, John spent a decade managing and touring nationally with his wife and good friends in CRAICMORE, a Celtic music group.

Currently, John’s engagement in the criminal justice reform movement has him working in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department jail facilities, the largest jail system in the country. For over three years MacAdams has provided individual and group secular Mindfulness Meditation instruction and support to inmates from a diversity of religious faiths and backgrounds. In this capacity, John has also delivered the Path of Freedom program and other secular mindfulness-based skills training. He is Senior Buddhist Chaplain for Men’s Central Jail whose inmate population ranges from 5100-5600 on any given day.

John is currently working with Fleet Maull to develop opportunities to deliver PMI’s Mindfulness-Based Wellness and Resiliency (MBWR) training to various law enforcement agencies in California and Nevada. Other areas of focus include offering services to folks in community re-entry transition from incarceration, criminal life or substance abuse.
