John is an EMI Certified Mindfulness Teacher (500 hour) and a proud graduate in the first cohort of the Engaged Mindfulness Institute’s Year Two MTT in-depth program.

Currently, John’s engagement in the criminal justice reform movement has him working in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department jail facilities, the largest jail system in the country. For over four and a half years MacAdams has provided individual and group secular Mindfulness Meditation instruction and support to inmates from a diversity of religious faiths and backgrounds. In his capacity, John has also delivered the Path Of Freedom programming and other secular mindfulness based skills training. He is Senior Buddhist Chaplain for Men’s Central Jail with an inmate population of 5600.

Most recently, MacAdams traveled with the Center for Mindfulness in Corrections (CMC) throughout Oregon to five affiliated facilities supporting the delivery of Mindfulness Based Wellness and Resiliency (MBWR) training to corrections officers and staff in the OR Department of Corrections.

MacAdams is also working with Fleet Maull to develop opportunities to deliver CMC’s MBWR training to various law enforcement agencies in California and Nevada. Other areas of focus include offering services to folks in community re-entry transition from incarceration, criminal life or substance abuse.

A student and practitioner of Shambhala Buddhism since 1982, for over 18 years John has been teaching Mindfulness Awareness Meditation within Shambhala and is an active Assistant Director for Shambhala Training.

MacAdams spent 25 years in the film business working in studios and on locations in Los Angeles, across the country, in Canada & Mexico. A life long musician, John spent a decade performing, managing and touring nationally with his wife and good friends in CRAICMORE, a Celtic music group.
