Doug McCanne is a student of Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, and his son Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche. He has been practicing and studying the Shambhala and Buddhist paths for four decades, and has been teaching in those traditions for nearly 25 years. He is also a Director for the Shambhala Training Heart of Warriorship and Sacred Path programs.
For the last nine years, in addition to his Shambhala teaching commitments, Doug has been teaching and overseeing a mindfulness meditation program for inmates at Oregon State Penitentiary. More recently he has also taken part in developing and initiating a mindfulness-based wellness and resilience training program for Oregon Department of Corrections staff. This was developed in collaboration and under the guidance of Fleet Maul and the Center for Mindfulness in Corrections. This year it is being offered to over sixty volunteer staff at six different prisons in Oregon, with more prisons to be added next year.
After a successful career in real estate finance in California, Doug retired and with his wife Jay moved to Portland, Oregon in 2005, where they are engaged in several community activities. They have three grown sons and two grandsons, so far.
